Claude Memory Tip: Use # to Save Preferences and Instructions

Quick tip for Claude.ai users: Press # in the chat input to add things to Claude’s memory.
This lets you save:
- Preferences - Your coding style, communication preferences, formatting choices
- Tools - Custom instructions for how Claude should use specific tools
- Instructions - Recurring context you don’t want to repeat every conversation
Why This Matters
Without memory, every Claude conversation starts fresh. You’d need to remind Claude of your preferences each time:
“Remember, I prefer TypeScript over JavaScript, use functional patterns, and keep responses concise…”
With memory, you set it once and Claude remembers across all future conversations.
What to Save
Good candidates for memory:
- Your tech stack and language preferences
- Project-specific context you reference often
- Output format preferences (bullet points vs prose, code comments, etc.)
- Role-specific instructions (“You’re helping me as a DevOps engineer…”)
How It Works
- Type
#in the Claude chat input - Select “Add to memory” or similar option
- Write what you want Claude to remember
- It persists across conversations
This is part of Claude’s personalization features—building a working relationship where Claude understands your context without constant re-explanation.
Available on Claude.ai (Pro/Team plans). Memory settings can be reviewed and edited in your account preferences.
